Theory and practice of building a complete content management system using only JSON files. Faster to develop, easier to backup, less complex.

When Is JSON the Right Choice?

Not every project needs MySQL. If the record count is under 10,000 and there are no complex nested queries, JSON flat files will be faster to develop and easier to maintain.

Architecture Design

Core principle: each record is an independent JSON file. Organization is via naming convention, not a database.

  • storage/articles/{slug}.json
  • storage/users/{id}.json
  • storage/orders/{date}-{id}.json

The Repository Pattern

The abstraction layer that reads files and converts them to PHP arrays. This layer can be swapped for MySQL later without changing View code.

Limits and Constraints

JSON CMS is not suitable when you need: many concurrent write sessions, complex JOIN queries, or data exceeding millions of records.
